Update on Home Moves in Scotland

Sarah Newnham - Tuesday, September 29, 2020

Following on from the announcement on Tuesday that further restrictions are to be imposed across Scotland to try to minimise the spread of Covid-19, the Scottish Government have now released further guidance on how these restrictions may affect house moves.

It has been confirmed that house moves can continue to go ahead, provided they can be carried out in a safe manner.  Professionals and trades who need to enter people’s homes to facilitate a home move can continue to do so.  This would include solicitors, estate agents and associated professionals entering a home in order to put a property on the market.  It would also include removal companies who require entry to a property in order to assist with a house move.

In regards to house viewings, the Scottish Government have put emphasis on a “virtual first” approach.  House viewings should therefore be carried out virtually where possible.  Where it is not possible, viewings should be arranged on an appointment only basis with as few people attending the viewing as possible.  Social distancing guidelines should be adhered to at all times with it being suggested that face coverings should be worn by all present while the viewing is taking place.

This is welcome news for the property sector, which had seen a sharp downturn in property transactions during the initial lockdown period.  With property sales being allowed to continue, this will allow the property market to recover.  The safety and health of all involved must always be the top priority, however, so how property sales and house moves proceed will likely be quite different for the foreseeable future.
